BBOB v’s Olney 19th October 2008
Team – Josh Wright, Jareth York, Bradley Smith, Rory Moore, Daryl Moore, Tom Howard, Nick Fraser, Rhys Gibbs, Adam Coles, Adam Jerhidri, Cameron Bedford, Jesse Lancaster, Tom Wykes Daniel Jeyes, Scott Hogson ,Dan Stone, Charlie Wake and Callum Norfolk
Beat Olney 25-5
Tries – Rhys Gibbs, Josh Wright, Daniel Jeyes, Daryl Moore
Conversions – Cameron Bedford, Rory Moore
An excellent morning for rugby saw both teams fired up and ready to play rugby.
First to score was BB with a powerful drive from the forwards seeing Rhys Gibbs twist his way through to the line to score with Cameron Bedford adding the extras. BB kept the pressure on Olney causing them to make some unaccustomed handling errors with Josh Wright the benefactor on one occasion, collecting a loose ball to mark his first try of the season and BB’s second of the game, Cameron Bedford narrowly missing his second kick to goal. Dan Stone was enjoying his best game of the season at centre making some crucial tackles and going close on more than one occasion but was forced to leave the field with injury just before half time.
More of the same from BB after the break saw Daniel Jeyes stopped just short of the line. However a few minutes later Daniel was able to finish off this time by scoring his debut try for BB. Rory Moore was unlucky with his conversion, seeing the ball drop just short of the posts. With the score line reading a good day for BB, It was no reflection of the determination of the Olney side, who on many occasions were denied by a resolute BB defence, however as the legs started to tire, gaps began to open and Olney powered through to score a well deserved try, but failed to convert. BB also took advantage of the gaps with their spritely scrum half, Daryl Moore, concluding affairs with his trade mark quick tap and go penalty in the oppositions 22 to run in under the posts much to the delight of his brother, Rory, for an easier conversion. Joining Daniel Jeyes as new squad members were Callum Norfolk, Tom Wykes and Jesse Lancaster who all enjoyed good games, giving the BB coach’s a new, but welcomed, selection headache. This was clearly the best performance from BB this season much to the delight of the coaches and spectators alike. The man of the match on his debut for BB was Jesse Lancaster showing great skill and pace, Jesse was denied what would have been a fantastic solo try from 40 metres out by a last gasp tackle from Olney with only a metre to go.

Only for the fallen war heroes did the BBOB front 8 give respect this Sunday, as they set out from the start to push and bully the ON’s pack who had no answer to a powerful front 5 and the speedy back row forwards. It was only a matter of minutes before the advantage of good clean ball to the backs would allow BBOB to find the gap for the ever lively Daryl Moore to sneak through and touch down under the posts for his brother Rory to convert. BBOB’s classy new addition, JK Smith, was happy to control the game for the backs either from full back or at fly half, slotting in seamlessly with his new teammates.
While both sides fielded an under strength side, allowing new players to get game time, it was BBOB enjoying the sunshine and the possession, with two of the front row, Nick Fraser and Rhys Gibbs, collecting a try apiece and Josh Wright the benefactor from a well worked move from a scrum. With the tries in the bag BBOB took their feet of the gas a little, this gave ON’s the chance they needed to get back into the game scoring 3 tries in quick succession, converting 2. A try saving tackle out wide from Tom Wykes jolted his BBOB team mates to re-group and re-focus and from another powerful controlled move from the forwards Daryl added another for his brace. Then it was time for the Jesse Lancaster show, the promising number 8, playing only his fourth game of rugby, put in yet another man of the match performance to collect a maiden hat-trick, twice leaving the ON backs clutching at air as he raced in from 30 metres out to dot down under the posts. Jake Hood was unlucky not to finish off a well deserved try, but took consolation in converting one of

Lost to Banbury 0-7
On a cold wet morning, BBOB left the field wondering how they lost this game. Facing the toughest challenge of the season so far in Banbury only seemed to inspire the team more and the forwards, lead by the uncompromising Nick Fraser put Banbury under pressure time after time. With the backs having to fight a little harder to gain and maintain the ball, they will wonder why some of their otherwise excellent ball handling let them down at the most crucial time when it seemed easier to score. However, one lapse of concentration after a forced replacement in the backs saw Banbury collect the winning try and conversion. After this point BBOB where camped on the Banbury line with a succession of 5 metre line outs and scrums only to see the wet ball pop out of hand. Two excellent gain line breaks from Jake Hood and JK Smith should have seen the game won, but for Banbury to make last gasp tackles count. Rory Moore made a break for the try line at the death, with Man of the Match, Scott Hogben, waiting on the wing to collect and score, but the heavy ground gave Banbury the extra defender they needed with Rory slipping just as the pass was being made and the ball going forward. Victory in defeat was the phrase being banded in the BBOB camp through their brave effort, with both teams giving everybody a wonderful display of

Despite this slim defeat BBOB will take heart in another solid performance and display of fast running rugby on a good pitch. With some absentees BBOB had to field a side with some players out of position, this showed in the first 10 minutes as Oadby were able to run in 2 soft tries through their speedy backs. After this BBOB got to grips with the game and took control in most areas, winning all their own set pieces and taking some against the head. A sterling performance from the front pack saw Charlie Wake play his best game of the season, but it was Jesse Lancaster to steal the limelight once more in the front 8 with 2 thirty metre breaks to score his brace with captain, Cameron Bedford, adding a conversion for BBOB to take a much deserved 12-10 lead. A succession of injuries at the death caused disruption in the BBOB backline giving Oadby the chance to get the ball wide to score the winning try. There is still more to come from this fast improving team, but already they make a cold snowy Sunday morning worth braving. Daryl Moore just edged the Man of the Match award from a clutch of other well deserving players in a match that BBOB could have, and should have won

BB felt the pressure of starting without 3 first choice forwards and facing a strong wind as they struggled to get out of their own half for the first 15 minutes. However a resolute defence that was marshalled excellently by Jake Hood kept Olney down to only one try scoring opportunity, which was kicked dead from a chip and run. As BB found their structure in the pack and the backs wanting to run every ball, it was only a matter of time before they found the gaps out wide to score in quick succession through debutant, Stan and the lively JK Smith, who converted his own try.
Even with a comfortable lead and playing with the wind in the second half, BB decided to keep the ball tight through the forwards and let the backs run the ball at Olney. It wasn’t long before Jesse Lancaster collected his customary try with a 30 metre break and Callum Norfolk scored his first try of the season coming off his wing to cut through the defence to dot under the posts. Callum added the extras points himself. Stan collected his second minutes later with another 30 metre line break. With Adam Jerhidri and Rhys Gibbs playing their best games of the season in the forwards, it was the prop Tom Howard who stole the show for the MOM award capped off with the last try of the game, but sadly not the conversion even from in front of the posts.

A tough physical game saw BB lose a game which they could have and should have won and remain mystified by some strange decisions by the man in the middle. A fired up Saints side took advantage of unusually weak tackles from BB to take a 17 point lead in the first 15 mins, playing with the wind and the referees generous decisions. BB then rallied to play the ball through the hands to open up the Saints defence to allow the impish Daryl Moore to dot down. A mazy run and off load by JK Smith gave inside centre Jake Hood the chance to set BB up for another 22 metre insurgence by crashing through 3 Saints tackles. The move was finished off in style by BB hooker Nick Fraser with help from Man of the Match, Adam Jerhidri.
The second half saw saints snatch a well worked try to stretch their lead, albeit against the run of play. The BB back line who have found a new lease of life this season soon responded with the try of the game, with full back, Scott Hogben joining the line to pass to BB captain, Cameron Bedford, who, after breaking the gain line popped the ball into the welcoming arms of his winger Callum Norfolk, the flying winger rounded the last 2 defenders to collect his 2nd try of the season. An agitated referee saw no offence with a Saints 5 metre scrum in the dying seconds, allowing the home side to push the scrum back to the BB try line for their No.8 to pick up and dive for the line. BBOB will look forward to a return leg at St Andrews Road.

Lost to Wellingborough 31 – 10
Tries – Rory Moore, Nick Fraser
Another lacklustre display from the BBOB forwards for the second week running enabled a strong Wellingborough side to dominate this game. Poor set pieces and soft support at the contact area and break down allowed Wellingborough to open up BB and score some very good tries. Only a solid effort by the BB backline stopped a flood of tries in both halves. The man of the match award was given to Daniel Jeyes playing at open side flanker as he was the only forward who seemed to hold his discipline and take the game to Wellingborough. Some flashes of brilliance saw Nick Fraser collect his second try in as many games and go close a couple of times. JK Smith, playing at fly half and returning to his old club for the first time, will wonder how he managed to stay off the score sheet. Jake Hood and his Captain Cameron Bedford combined well in the centres to keep the Wellingborough defence honest, but with little support coming from their front pack, found their good work undone too easily. A clever cross field kick from

A returning to form BBOB team was too much for a Lions side who had little or no answer for a powerful first half display from the BB forwards. BB could have and should have collected their first points within the first 10 seconds of the game as new boy Walter Ebulubu, playing at 8, collected the kick off and chased down the Lions try line only to fall a metre short. An inspired front pack found their early season form clearing out the contact areas and counter rucking with a new found vigour to give the backs good clean ball. This was not wasted by the BB backs as they put on a fantastic display of flowing rugby all across the back line. The BB backs made light work of ball handling even playing on a waterlogged heavy pitch. BB captain Cameron Bedford was the first to go over, completing a good backs move. Walter Ebulubu then completed what he threatened in the first minute with another powerful run to score under the posts, Rory Moore added the extras. Another flowing backs move saw Tom Wykes go over in the corner for his first try in BB colours. Jesse Lancaster and Walter Ebulubu, within a space of a couple of minutes, both powered over with Walter’s try being converted by Jake Hood. A better performance in the second half from the Lions limited BB to a Daryl Moore try and Jake Hood conversion. With 3 new players making their debut in the BB line up this was probably the best performance of the season so the coaches decided to hand the whole team a Man of the Match award. Special thanks to Leicester Lions for their generous hospitality.

BBOB maintained their excellent form following the 36-0 defeat of Leicester Lions the previous week, although Rushden did start the strongest with an unconverted try within the first 4 minutes. After that the game was dominated by BB, even with a new front row line up. The BB forwards were matching a strong Rushden pack in the early exchanges and always looked powerful at the contact area and in the loose. The determination of the forwards gave their No.9, Daryl Moore every opportunity to run at the Rushden defence, which he duly did, with clever support play and good running lines from the backs orchestrator, Jake Hood, it was not going to be long before BB would level the scores, this was achieved through the BB captain and man of the match, Cameron Bedford. Walter Ebulubu, playing only his second game for BB at blindside, scored his first try and 3rd in 2 games to give Jake Hood an easier chance to slot over the extras. Daryl then scored the try he was threatening to do to put BB further ahead. Walter and Cameron then collected their brace of tries, only for Walter to sneak it for the forwards with his hat trick score. The forwards had the bragging rights over the backs in the changing rooms, as Tom Howard touched down for his try following a fantastic try saving tackle from BB one metre shy of their own try line to turn the ball over and pass through the hands to run the ball back at Rushden, much to the delight of the big prop forward. Daniel Jeyes nearly repeated the same move with a chase back and pick up in his 22 only to be denied a score by choosing the wrong option to come inside instead of backing himself to go on the outside. A special mention for Charlie Wake who played probably his best game in a BB shirt, to make a good day all round for the BB forwards.
